Archibald Higbie Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCDBEFGHIJKLMNMOMM P

I Loathed you Spoon River I tried to rise above youA
I was ashamed of you I despised youA
As the place of my nativityB
And there in Rome among the artistsC
Speaking Italian speaking FrenchD
I seemed to myself at times to be freeB
Of every trace of my originE
I seemed to be reaching the heights of artF
And to breathe the air that the masters breathedG
And to see the world with their eyesH
But still they'd pass my work and sayI
What are you driving at my friendJ
Sometimes the face looks like Apollo'sK
At others it has a trace of Lincoln'sL
There was no culture you know in Spoon RiverM
And I burned with shame and held my peaceN
And what could I do all covered overM
And weighted down with western soilO
Except aspire and pray for anotherM
Birth in the world with all of Spoon RiverM
Rooted out of my soulP
