Rhyme Scheme: ABCDAEFBGHBAIJKLMNB| I was crushed between Altgeld and Armour | A |
| I lost many friends much time and money | B |
| Fighting for Altgeld whom Editor Whedon | C |
| Denounced as the candidate of gamblers and anarchists | D |
| Then Armour started to ship dressed meat to Spoon River | A |
| Forcing me to shut down my slaughter house | E |
| And my butcher shop went all to pieces | F |
| The new forces of Altgeld and Armour caught me | B |
| At the same time | G |
| I thought it due me to recoup the money I lost | H |
| And to make good the friends that left me | B |
| For the Governor to appoint me Canal Commissioner | A |
| Instead he appointed Whedon of the Spoon River Argus | I |
| So I ran for the legislature and was elected | J |
| I said to hell with principle and sold my vote | K |
| On Charles T Yerkes' street car franchise | L |
| Of course I was one of the fellows they caught | M |
| Who was it Armour Altgeld or myself | N |
| That ruined me | B |
