The Tragedy Of Age Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABACDEDE FGFGFHFH IAIAFJFJ KFKFLML

I HEARD an old man say todayA
'A young man gives me orders now 'B
A beardless youth gets better payA
And tells me what to do and howC
While I have toiled for forty yearsD
A stripling enters in the raceE
And with a single bound appearsD
And eagerly usurps my placeE
-
'I've seen them shake their heads at meF
And I have often heard them sighG
As they my faltering hand would seeF
'The times alas have passed him byG
He isn't what he used to beF
He's lost his grip ' and well I knewH
hat youth at last had conquered meF
As youth old age will ever doH
-
'And now it's come and I beholdI
Young fighters stripped to face the frayA
Exultant clear of eye and boldI
Where I was wont to lead the wayA
My nerve they say is gone from meF
I fear to do what youth will dareJ
I shrink from opportunityF
My place is in an easy chairJ
-
'This has been so since time beganK
And to the end of time will beF
Brief is the working time of manK
Brief as the leaf upon the treeF
The young man comes the old man goesL
Old eyes old brains old bodies failM
Beyond our powers the struggle growsL
Old age drops out So ends the tale '-
