The Responsibility Of Fatherhood Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDED FGFGHIHI DJDJACAC JDJDBKBK HIHIDLDL

BEFORE you came my little ladA
I used to think that I was goodB
Some vicious habits too I hadA
But wouldn't change them if I couldB
I held my head up high and saidC
'I'm all that I have need to beD
It matters not what path I tread 'E
But that was ere you came to meD
-
I treated lightly sacred thingsF
And went my way in search of funG
Upon myself I kept no stringsF
And gave no heed to folly doneG
I gave myself up to the fightH
For worldly wealth and earthly fameI
And sought advantage wrong or rightH
But that was long before you cameI
-
But now you sit across from meD
Your big brown eyes are opened wideJ
And every deed I do you seeD
And O I dare hot step asideJ
I've shaken loose from habits badA
And what is wrong I've come to dreadC
Because I know my little ladA
That you will follow where I treadC
-
I want those eyes to glow with prideJ
In me I want those eyes to seeD
The while we wander side by sideJ
The sort of man I'd have you beD
And so I'm striving to be goodB
With all my might that you may knowK
When this great world is understoodB
What pleasures are worth while belowK
-
I see life in a different lightH
From what I did before you cameI
Then anything that pleased seemed rightH
But you are here to bear my nameI
And you are looking up to meD
With those big eyes from day to dayL
And I'm determined not to beD
The means of leading you astrayL
