She is gentle kind and fairA
And there's silver in her hairA
She has known the touch of sorrowB
But the smile of her is sweetC
And sometimes it seems to meD
That her mission is to beD
The gracious cookie ladyD
To the youngsters of the streetC
-
All the children in the blockE
Daily stand beside the crockE
Where she keeps the sugar cookiesF
That the little folks enjoyG
And no morning passes o'erH
That a tapping at her doorI
Doesn't warn her of the visitJ
Of a certain little boyG
-
She has made him feel that heD
Has a natural right to beD
In her kitchen when she's bakingK
Pies and cakes and ginger breadL
And each night to me he bringsM
All the pretty tender thingsM
About little by gone childrenN
That the cookie lady saidL
-
Oh dear cookie lady sweetC
May you beautify our streetC
With your kind and gentle presenceO
Many more glad years I prayP
May the skies be bright above youQ
As you've taught our babes to love youQ
You will scar their hearts with sorrowB
If you ever go awayP
-
Life is strange and when I scan itR
I believe God tries to plan itR
So that where He sends his babiesF
In that neighborhood to dwellS
One of rare and gracious beautyD
Shall abide whose sweetest dutyD
Is to be the cookie ladyD
That the children love so wellS
