The Change Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFF GGHHIIJJBBDD KKLLMMNNOOAA

'Twas hard to think that he must goA
We knew that we should miss him soA
We thought that he must always stayB
Beside us laughing day by dayB
That he must never know the careC
And hurt and grief of life out thereC
Then came the call for youth and heD
Talked with his mother and with meD
And suddenly we learned the boyE
Was hungering to know the joyE
Of doing something real with lifeF
And that he craved the test of strifeF
-
And so we steeled ourselves to dreadG
To see at night his empty bedG
To feel the silence and the gloomH
That hovers o'er his vacant roomH
And though we wept the day he wentI
And many a lonely hour we've spentI
We've come to think as he somehowJ
And we are more contented nowJ
We're proud that we can stand and sayB
We have a boy who's gone awayB
And we are glad to know that heD
Is serving where he ought to beD
-
It's queer the change that time has broughtK
We're different now in speech and thoughtK
His letters home mean joy to usL
His difficulties we discussL
When word of his promotion cameM
His mother with her eyes aflameM
With happiness and pride rushed outN
To tell the neighbors round aboutN
Her boy Her boy is doing wellO
What greater news can mothers tellO
I think that pity now we showA
For those who have no boys to goA
