July The Fourth, 1917 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGHGI JKJKLMLM ENENOAOA GPGPQBQ

Time was the cry went round the worldA
America for freedom speaksB
A new flag is to day unfurledA
An eagle on the mountain shrieksB
A king is failing on his throneC
A race of men defies his powerD
And no one could have guessed or knownC
The burden of that splendid hourD
-
A bell rang out that summer dayE
And men and women stood and heardF
That tongue of brass had more to sayE
Than could be spoken by a wordF
It spoke the thoughts of honest menG
It whispered Destiny's intentsH
And rang a warning loudly thenG
To Kings of all the continentsI
-
The old bell in its holy loftJ
Where pigeons nest has ceased to swingK
And yet through many a day and oftJ
A weary people hear it singK
That hour long years ago when firstL
America for freedom foughtM
The bonds of slavery were burstL
That hour began the reign of thoughtM
-
Here comes another summer dayE
America is on the seaN
America has dared to sayE
That other people shall be freeN
No selfish stain her banner marsO
Her flag for truth and right unfurledA
With every stripe and all its starsO
Still speaks its message to the worldA
-
Out where the soldiers fight for menG
Out where for others heroes dieP
Out where they storm the Tyrant's denG
The Starry Banner lights the skyP
And once again the cry goes outQ
That brings the flush of hope to cheeksB
Grown pale by bitter war and doubtQ
'America for Freedom speaks '-
