The price of his crime had paid | B |

'The deed was yours and the wide outdoors | F |
No longer belongs to you ' | G |

Oh it isn't so long ago there went | H |
A toddling lad of three | C |
At the close of day for a bit of play | I |
Astride of his father's knee | C |
And the father scowled and sent him off | J |
'Go play with the lads outside | K |
Don't bother me with your pranks ' said he | C |
And he sneered when the youngster cried | K |

And the father went to his work all day | I |
And went to his bed at night | L |
And he gave no heed to the baby's need | M |
Nor shared in the lad's delight | L |
He never knew who his playmates were | N |
Nor followed him off to school | O |
But in manner grim he punished him | D |
Whenever he broke the rule | O |

And the youngster was not in bed | Q |
But the father slept while the mother kept | R |
The watch that all mothers dread | Q |
And whenever the mother spoke of him | D |
Through the long black hours of night | L |
As the cold wind howled the father growled | S |
'Don't worry the boy's all right ' | - |

'The doer of crime must pay | I |
In a grated cell we'll make him dwell | U |
