Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFG HCICJKCK ILMLNODO PQRQDLS TIU VWXW

They put him in jail for the thing he'd doneA
For that was the law they'd madeB
They turned the key on his youth till heC
The price of his crime had paidB
And the wise judge said as he sentenced himD
And spoke from the facts he knewE
'The deed was yours and the wide outdoorsF
No longer belongs to you 'G
-
Oh it isn't so long ago there wentH
A toddling lad of threeC
At the close of day for a bit of playI
Astride of his father's kneeC
And the father scowled and sent him offJ
'Go play with the lads outsideK
Don't bother me with your pranks ' said heC
And he sneered when the youngster criedK
-
And the father went to his work all dayI
And went to his bed at nightL
And he gave no heed to the baby's needM
Nor shared in the lad's delightL
He never knew who his playmates wereN
Nor followed him off to schoolO
But in manner grim he punished himD
Whenever he broke the ruleO
-
Midnight came not so long agoP
And the youngster was not in bedQ
But the father slept while the mother keptR
The watch that all mothers dreadQ
And whenever the mother spoke of himD
Through the long black hours of nightL
As the cold wind howled the father growledS
'Don't worry the boy's all right '-
-
Society said at the end of thingsT
'The doer of crime must payI
In a grated cell we'll make him dwellU
Shut in from the light of day '-
But I like to think that the Judge on HighV
Who rights all our earthly wrongsW
At another time will fix that crimeX
Exactly where it belongsW
