That I merely had come for a chat | B |
Did it strike you the times that I lingered till twelve | D |
And hated to leave you alone | E |
I was doing that merely to fill up my time | F |
Because I 'd no home of my own | E |

So sudden you say Yet for years I have stood | G |
On your doorstep each evening at eight | H |
Did you think I had come for a chat with your ma | I |
Or a word with your maiden aunt Kate | H |
Did you think when I sighed as I fondled your hand | J |
'T was dyspepsia that troubled me then | K |
Or that the cigars I bestowed on your dad | L |

- | |
O the tickets for shows I have purchased for you | M |
The automobiles I have hired | N |
The lockets and bracelets and purses and things | O |
All gifts that I knew you desired | N |
That I tenderly laid at your feet as a shrine | P |
Though each cost me a half a week's pay | Q |
I thought that my actions betrayed my design | P |
And yet 'It's so sudden ' you say | Q |
