Holding only a handful of rushlightB
they pressed deeper into the dark at a crouchC
until the great rock chamberD
flowered around them and they stoodB
in an enormous womb ofE
flickering light and darklight a placeF
to make a start Raised hands cast flapping shadowsG
over the sleeker shapes of radianceH
-
They've left the world of weather and panicI
behind them and gone on in drawing the darkJ
in their wake pushing as one pulseK
to the core of stone The pigments mixed in big shellsL
are crushed ore petals and pollens berriesM
and the binding juices oozedB
out of chosen barks The beastsN
-
begin to take shape from hands and feather tuftsO
soaked in ochre manganese madder mallow whiteB
stroking the live rock letting slopes and contoursP
mould those forms from chance coaxingQ
rigid dips and folds and bulgesR
to lend themselves to necks bellies swelling haunchesR
a forehead or a twist of horn tails and manesR
curling to a crazy gallopS
-
Intent and human they attachT
the mineral vegetable animalU
realms to themselves inscribingQ
the one unbroken lineV
everything depends on from thatB
impenetrable centreD
to the outer intangibles of light and air evenW
the speed of the horse the bison's fear the arcJ
of gentleness that this big bellied cowX
arches over its spindling calf or the lancingQ
dance of death thatB
bristles out of the buck'sR
struck flank On this one line they leaveY
a beak headed human figure of sticksR
and one small chalky human handB
-
We'll never know if they worked in silenceR
like people praying the way our monksR
illuminated their own dark agesR
in cross hatched rocky cloistersR
where they contrived a bindingQ
labyrinth of lit affinitiesR
to spell out in nature's lace and fableU
their mindful blinding sixth senseR
of a god of shadows or whether like birdsR
tracing their great bloodlines over the globeZ
they kept a constant gossip upS
of praise encouragement complaintB
-
It doesn't matter we knowA2
they went with guttering rushlightB
into the dark came to termsR
with the given world must have hadB
as their hands moved steadilyB2
by spiderlight one desireD
we'd recognise they would before going onC2
beyond this border zone this nowhereD2
that is now here leave somethingQ
upright and bright behind them in the darkJ
