When I am busying aboutA
Sewing on buttons tapes and stringsB
Hanging the week's wet washing outA
Or ironing the children's thingsB
Sweeping and dusting cleaning gratesC
Scrubbing the dresser or the floorsD
Washing the greasy dinner platesC
Scouring the brasses on the doorsD
-
I wonder what it's all aboutA
And when did people first beginE
To keep the dirt and wornness outA
And keep the wholesome comfort inE
How long it is since women boreF
This round of wash and make and mendG
And what God makes us do it forF
And whether it will ever endG
-
When God began to do His workH
He made a new thing every dayI
Even now He is not one to shirkH
But makes things always some new wayI
He made the earth and sky and sunJ
The creatures of the sea and woodK
And when his first week's work was doneJ
He saw that it was very goodK
-
But He for all He worked so fastL
To finish air and wave and shoreF
Knew that this work of His would lastL
For ever and for evermoreF
On Saturday night He was contentM
He knew that Monday would not bringN
Need for another firmamentM
Another set of everythingN
-
But though my work is easier farO
Than making sky and sea and sunJ
It's harder than God's labours areO
Because my work is never doneJ
I sweep and churn save and contriveP
I bake and brew I don't complainQ
But every Monday morning I'veP
Last Monday's work to do againR
-
I'm good at work I work awayI
Always the same my work must goS
The flowers grow different every dayI
That's why I like to see them growS
If up in Heaven God understoodM
He'd let me for my ParadiseT
Make all things new and very goodM
And never make the same thing twiceT
