The fairies have been busy while you sleptA
They have been laughing where the sad rain weptA
They have taught Beauty to the ignorant flowersB
Set tasks of hope to weary wind torn bowersB
And heard the lessons learned in school rooms coldC
By seedling snapdragon and marigoldC
At dawn while still you slept I grew awareD
How good the fairies are how many and fairD
-
The fairy whose delightful gown is redE
Across a corner of our garden spedE
And where her flying raiment fluttered pastF
Its roseate reflection still is castF
Red poppies by the rhododendron's sideG
Paeonies gorgeous in their summer prideG
And red may bushes by the old red wallH
Shower down their crimson petals over allH
-
Then she whose gown is gold and gold her hairD
Swept down the golden steep straight sunbeam stairD
She lit the tulip lamps she lit the torchI
Of hollyhock beside the cottage porchI
She dressed the honeysuckle in fringe of goldC
She gave the king cups fairy wealth to holdC
She kissed St John's wort till it opened wideG
She set the yarrow by the river sideG
-
Then came the lady all whose robes are whiteJ
She made the pale buds blossom in delightJ
Set silver stars upon the jasmine's hairD
And gave the stream white lily buds to wearD
She painted lilies white and pearl white phloxB
White poppies passion flowers and gray leaved stocksB
Her pure kind touch redeemed the most forlornK
And even the vile petunia smiled new bornK
-
The dearest fairy of all green is her gownL
She kissed the plane trees in the tiresome townL
She smoothed the pastures and the lawn's pale sheenM
She decked the boughs with hangings fresh and greenM
She showed each flower the one and only wayN
Its beauty of shape and colour to displayN
She taught the world to be a ParadiseB
Of changing leaf and blade for tired eyesB
-
Then one and all they came where you were laidO
In your strait bed my little lovely maidO
The red robed fairy kissed your lips your faceB
The white robed made your heart her dwelling placeB
Into your eyes the green robed fairy smiledP
The golden fairy touched your dreams my childP
And one not named but mightiest made my DearQ
The innermost rose of the re flowered yearQ
