What of the garden I gaveA
God said to meB
Hast thou been diligent to foster and saveA
The life of flower and treeB
How have the roses thrivenC
The lilies I have givenC
The pretty scented miracles that SpringD
And Summer come to bringD
-
My garden is fair and dearE
I said to GodF
From thorns and nettles I have kept it clearE
Green trimmed its sodF
The rose is red and brightG
The lily a live delightG
I have not lost a flower of all the flowersH
That blessed my hoursH
-
What of the child I gaveA
God said to meB
The little little one I died to saveA
And gave in trust to theeB
How have the flowers grownC
That in its soul were sownC
The lovely living miracles of youthI
And hope and joy and truthI
-
The child's face is all whiteG
I said to GodF
It cries for cold and hunger in the nightG
Its little feet have trodF
The pavement muddy and coldJ
It has no flowers to holdJ
And in its soul the flowers you set are deadK
Thou fool God saidK
