The Poor Man's Guest Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFGF HIHI AJAJ BKBK

One came to me in royal guiseA
With banners flying fair and freeB
But many griefs had made me wiseA
And I refused to bow the kneeB
-
Then one drew near who bore the flowerC
Of all the flowers of June and MayD
But many griefs had lent me powerC
And I was strong to turn awayD
-
Then came a beggar to my gateE
With shoulders bowed to sorrow's packF
So weary and so desolateG
I had no heart to turn him backF
-
I let him share my board my bedH
I warmed him in my shrinking breastI
I gave him all I had and saidH
You only you have been my guestI
-
Love passed in many a fair disguiseA
But never could an entrance winJ
But you came in such piteous wiseA
Poor friend I could but let you inJ
-
Low laughed my guest Kind friend said heB
And dropped the rags he was weary ofK
And I betrayed saw over meB
The terrible face of outraged LoveK
