The Despot Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDD EEFF GGHH IJGG KKLL DDMM

The garden mould was damp and chillA
Winter had had his brutal willA
Since over all the year's contentB
His devastating legions wentB
-
The Spring's bright banners came there wokeC
Millions of little growing folkC
Who thrilled to know the winter doneD
Gave thanks and strove towards the sunD
-
Not so the elect reserved and slowE
To trust a stranger sun and growE
They hesitated cowered and hidF
Waiting to see what others didF
-
Yet even they a little grewG
Put out prim leaves to day and dewG
And lifted level formal headsH
In their appointed garden bedsH
-
The gardener came he coldly lovedI
The flowers that lived as he approvedJ
That duly decorously grewG
As he the despot meant them toG
-
He saw the wildlings flower more braveK
And bright than any cultured slaveK
Yet since he had not set them thereL
He hated them for being fairL
-
So he uprooted one by oneD
The free things that had loved the sunD
The happy eager fruitful seedsM
Who had not known that they were weedsM
