Young and a conqueror once on a dayA
Wild white Winter rode out this wayA
With his sword of ice and his banner of snowB
Vanquished the Summer and laid her lowB
-
Winter was young then young and strongC
Now he is old he has reigned too longC
He shall be routed he shall be slainD
Summer shall come to her own againE
-
See the champion of Summer wakeF
Little armies in field and brakeF
Cruel and cold has King Winter beenG
Fight for the Summer fight for the QueenH
-
First the aconite dots the mouldI
With little round cannon balls of goldI
Then to help in the winter's routJ
Regiments of crocuses march outJ
-
See the swords of the flag leaves shineK
See the shield of the celandineK
And daffodil lances green and keenH
To fight for the Summer fight for the QueenH
-
Silver triumphant the snowdrop swingsL
Banners that mock at defeated kingsL
And wherever the green of the new grass peersM
See the array of victorious spearsM
-
Daffodil trumpets soon shall soundN
Over the garden's battle groundN
And lovely ladies crowd out to seeO
The long procession of victoryO
-
Little daisies with snowy frillsP
Courtly tulips and sweet jonquilsP
Primrose and cowslip friends well metQ
With white wood sorrel and violetR
-
Hundreds of milkmaids by field and foldI
Thousands of buttercups licked with goldI
Budding hedges and woods and treesP
Spring brings freedom and life to theseP
-
Then the triumphant Spring shall rideS
Over the happy countrysideS
Deep in the woods the birds shall singT
The King is dead long live the KingT
-
But Spring is no king but a faithful knightU
He will ride on through the meadows brightU
Till at Summer's feet he shall light him downV
And lay at her feet the royal crownV
-
She will lean down where the roses twineK
Between the may trees' silver shineK
And look in the eyes of the dying knightU
Who led his army and won her fightU
-
She will stoop to his lips and sayP
Oh live O love O my true love stayP
While he smiles and sighs her arms betweenH
And dies for the Summer dies for the QueenH
