Second Nature Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC DDEEFF AAGGHH IIJJKK LLBBMM

When I was young how fair the skiesA
Such folly of cloud such blue depths wiseA
Such dews of morn such calms of eveB
So many the lure and the reprieveB
Life seemed a toy to break and mendC
And make a charm of in the endC
-
Then slowly all the dew dried upD
And only dust lay in the cupD
And since to slake his thirst man mustE
I sought a cup that had no dustE
And found it at the Goat and VineF
Mingled of brandy beer and wineF
-
The goat cup straight drew down the skiesA
And lit them in lunatick wiseA
What had been rose went scarlet redG
And the pearl tints grew like the deadG
And the fresh primrose of the mornH
Was the wet red of rain spoiled cornH
-
Now with a head that aches and nodsI
I hold weak hands out to the godsI
And oh forgiving gods and kindJ
They give me healing to my mindJ
And show me once again the lawnK
Green and clear gemmed with dews of dawnK
-
O gods who look down from aboveL
Upon our tangle of lust and loveL
And in your purity perceiveB
The worth of what our follies leaveB
Give us but this and sink the restM
To know that dew and dawn are bestM
