When once the twilight locks no longerA
Locked in the long worm of my fingerA
Nor damned the sea that sped about my fistB
The mouth of time sucked like a spongeC
The milky acid on each hingeD
And swallowed dry the waters of the breastE
-
When the galactic sea was suckedF
And all the dry seabed unlockedG
I sent my creature scouting on the globeH
That globe itself of hair and boneI
That sewn to me by nerve and brainJ
Had stringed my flask of matter to his ribK
-
My fuses are timed to charge his heartL
He blew like powder to the lightM
And held a little sabbath with the sunN
But when the stars assuming shapeO
Drew in his eyes the straws of sleepP
He drowned his father's magics in a dreamQ
-
All issue armoured of the graveR
The redhaired cancer still aliveS
The cataracted eyes that filmed their clothT
Some dead undid their bushy jawsU
And bags of blood let out their fliesV
He had by heart the Christ cross row of deathW
-
Sleep navigates the tides of timeX
The dry Sargasso of the tombY
Gives up its dead to such a working seaZ
And sleep rolls mute above the bedsA2
Where fishes' food is fed the shadesB2
Who periscope through flowers to the skyC2
-
When once the twilight screws were turnedD2
And mother milk was stiff as sandE2
I sent my own ambassador to lightM
By trick or chance he fell asleepP
And conjured up a carcass shapeO
To rob me of my fluids in his heartL
-
Awake my sleeper to the sunN
A worker in the morning townF2
And leave the poppied pickthank where he liesV
The fences of the light are downF2
All but the briskest riders thrownI
And worlds hang on the treesG2
