Twenty Four Years Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEEDFG

Twenty four years remind the tears of my eyesA
Bury the dead for fear that they walk to the grave in labourB
In the groin of the natural doorway I crouched like a tailorC
Sewing a shroud for a journeyD
By the light of the meat eating sunE
Dressed to die the sensual strut begunE
With my red veins full of moneyD
In the final direction of the elementary townF
I advance as long as forever isG

Gina M Montoya: My father, Jose Montoya, had me memorize this poem at the age of 4 (1959)! It was the summer before I started kindergarten. Pretty dark for a young girl. The immediate effect was great delight by my teachers--in me and my handsome father, a young college student at the College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, CA. It came to have the most profound meaning years after his death-with each line an answer to my unasked questions. He was a visual artist, songwriter/singer, guitarist, high school teacher, college professor, civil rights activist, and Poet Laureate of Sacramento. He shared his love of Dylan Thomas with me and Dylan will always be a part of our story!
