The hunchback in the parkA
A solitary misterB
Propped between trees and waterB
From the opening of the garden lockC
That lets the trees and water enterB
Until the Sunday sombre bell at darkA
-
Eating bread from a newspaperB
Drinking water from the chained cupD
That the children filled with gravelE
In the fountain basin where I sailed my shipF
Slept at night in a dog kennelE
But nobody chained him upD
-
Like the park birds he came earlyG
Like the water he sat downH
And Mister they called Hey misterB
The truant boys from the townH
Running when he had heard them clearlyG
On out of soundI
-
Past lake and rockeryB
Laughing when he shook his paperB
Hunchbacked in mockeryB
Through the loud zoo of the willow grovesJ
Dodging the park keeperB
With his stick that picked up leavesK
-
And the old dog sleeperB
Alone between nurses and swansL
While the boys among willowsM
Made the tigers jump out of their eyesN
To roar on the rockery stonesO
And the groves were blue with sailorsP
-
Made all day until bell timeQ
A woman figure without faultR
Straight as a young elmS
Straight and tall from his crooked bonesO
That she might stand in the nightT
After the locks and chainsU
-
All night in the unmade parkA
After the railings and shrubberiesU
The birds the grass the trees the lakeV
And the wild boys innocent as strawberriesU
Had followed the hunchbackW
To his kennel in the darkA
