Red evening clouds are mountainous in the westA
and the sun's feet disappear under the horizonB
Sparrows noisy over the brushwood doorC
I am a traveler home after a thousand milesD
My wife and children are startled to see me aliveE
The surprise ends but they can't stop wiping tearsF
In the chaotic world I was tossed aboutG
I've found my way home alive by accidentH
Neighbors crowd over our garden wallsI
They are moved sighing and even weepingJ
In deep night we hold candlesK
facing each other as if in dreamL
-
I live my late years as if I've stolen my lifeM
Very few joys after I returned homeN
My little son never lets go of my kneesO
afraid I will go away againP
I remember I liked to chase cool shadeQ
so I walk under trees by the pondR
Whistling the north wind is strongS
I finger past events and a hundred worries fry in my mindT
However the crops are harvestedU
wine spurts from the mouth of the flaskV
and I have enough to fill my cupsW
and console me in my duskX
-
A group of chickens make chaosY
and fight each other as guests arriveE
I drive them up bushes and treesO
before I hear knocking on my brushwood gateZ
four or five village elders greet meA2
and ask about my long absenceB2
Each of them brings a gift in handC2
Their wines pour out some clear some muddyA2
They apologize for their wine so wateryA2
as there was no one to grow milletD2
Weapons and horses can't rest yetE2
the young men are gone on the expedition eastF2
I offer a song for my old village folksG2
feeling deep gratitudeH2
After singing I sigh and throw back my headI2
and tears meander down our facesJ2
