Matchless in breeding and beautyA
a fine lady has taken refugeB
in this forsaken valleyA
She is of good family she saysC
but her fortune has withered awayD
now she lives as the grass and treesE
When the heartlands fell to the rebelsF
her brothers were put to deathG
birth and position availed nothingH
she was not even allowedI
to bring home their bones for burialJ
The world turns quickly againstK
those who have had their dayD
fortune is a lamp flameL
flickering in the windM
Her husband is a fickle fellowN
who has a lovely new womanO
Even the vetch tree is more constantP
folding its leaves every duskQ
and mandarin ducksR
always sleep with their matesS
But he has eyes onlyA
for his new woman's smileT
and his ears are deafU
to his first wife's weepingH
High in the mountainsV
spring water is clear as truthW
but when it reaches the lowlandsX
it is muddied with rumorY
Her serving maid returnsZ
from selling her pearlsA2
she drags a creeper overY
to cover holes in the roofB2
The flowers the lady picksC2
are not for her hairD2
and the handfuls of cypressE2
are a bitter stay against hungerY
Her pretty blue sleevesF2
are too thin for the coldG2
as evening fallsH2
she leans on the tall bambooI2
