he counts potatoes dug from the brown fieldB
counting the seed countingC
the cellar's portion outD
and bags the rest on the cart's floorE

in combs linen leatherG
tanned from deerhideD
and vinegar in a barrelH
hoped by hand at the forge's fireG

He walks by his ox's head ten daysI
to Portsmouth Market and sells potatoesJ
and the bag that carried potatoesJ
flaxseed birch brooms maple sugar gooseK
feathers yarnL

When the cart is empty he sells the cartD
When the cart is sold he sells the oxM
harness and yoke and walksN
home his pockets heavyF
with the year's coin for salt and taxesO
-
and at home by fire's light in November coldD
stitches new harnessP
for next year's ox in the barnL
and carves the yoke and saws planksQ
building the cart againR
