Put by the sword a dreamer saithA
The years of peace draw nighB
Already the millennial dawnC
Makes red the eastern skyB
-
Be not deceived It comes not yetD
The ancient passions keepE
Alive beneath their changing masksF
They are not dead They sleepE
-
Surely peace comes As sure as ManG
Rose from primeval slimeH
That was not yesterday There's stillI
A weary height to climbH
-
And we can dwell too long with dreamsJ
And play too much with wordsK
Forgetting our inheritanceL
Was bought and held with swordsM
-
But Truth you say makes tyrants quailN
Beats down embattled WrongO
If truth be armed Be not deceivedP
The strife is to the strongO
-
Words are not guns Words are not shipsQ
And ships and guns prevailN
Our liberties that blood has gainedR
Are guarded or they failN
-
Truth does not triumph without blowsS
Error not tamely yieldsT
But falsehood closes with quick faithA
Fierce on a thousand fieldsT
-
And surely somewhat of that faithA
Our fathers fought for clingsU
Which called this freedom's hemisphereV
Despite Earth's leagued kingsU
-
Great creeds grow thews or else they dieB
Thought clothed in deed is lordW
What are thy gods Thy gods brought loveX
They also brought a swordW
-
Unchallenged shall we always standY
Secure apart aloofZ
Be not deceived That hour shall comeA2
Which puts us to the proofZ
-
Then that we hold the trust we haveB2
Safeguarded for our sonsC2
Let us cease dreaming Let us haveB2
More ships more troops more gunsC2
