They haunt me they tease me with hintedA
Withheld revelationsB
The songs that I may not utterC
They lead me they flatter they woo meD
I follow I follow I snatchE
At the veils of their secrets in vainF
For lo they have left me and vanishedG
The songs that I cannot singH
-
There are visions elusive that comeI
With a quiver and shimmer of wingsJ
Shapes shadows and shapes and the murmurC
Of voicesK
Shapes that out of the twilightL
Leap and with gesture appealingH
Seem to deliver a messageM
And are gone 'twixt a breath and a breathN
Shapes that race in with the wavesO
Moving silverly under the moonP
-
And are gone ere they break into foam on the rocksQ
And recedeR
Breathings of love from invisibleS
FlutesT
Blown somewhere out in the tenderC
DuskU
That die on the bosom of SilenceV
FormlessV
And fleeter than thoughtW
Vaguer than thought or emotionX
What are these visitorsV
-
Out of the vast and unchartedY
Realms that encircle the visible worldZ
With a glimmer of light on their pinionsV
They rushA2
They waver they vanishB2
Leaving me stirred with a dream of the ultimateC2
beautyD
A sense of the ultimate musicD2
I never shall captureC
-
They are BeautyD
Formless and tremulous BeautyD
-
Beauty unbornE2
Beauty as yet unappareledD
In thoughtD
Beauty that hesitatesV
FaltersV
Withdraws from the verge of birthF2
FluttersV
Retreats from the portals of lifeG2
O Beauty for ever uncapturedD
O songs that I never shall singH
