Vain was the chief's the sage's prideA
They had no poet and they died POPEB
-
-
By Tigris or the streams of IndA
Ere Colchis rose or BabylonC
Forgotten empires dreamed and sinnedA
Setting tall towns against the dawnD
-
Which when the proud Sun smote uponC
Flashed fire for fire and pride for prideA
Their names were Ask oblivionE
They had no poet and they diedA
-
Queens dusk of hair and tawny skinnedA
That loll where fellow leopards fawnD
Their hearts are dust before the windA
Their loves that shook the world are wanC
-
Passion is mighty but anonC
Strong Death has Romance for his brideA
Their legends Ask oblivionC
They had no poet and they diedA
-
Heroes the braggart trumps that dinnedA
Their futile triumphs monarch pawnC
Wild tribesmen kingdoms disciplinedA
Passed like a whirlwind and were goneC
-
They built with bronze and gold and brawnC
The inner Vision still deniedA
Their conquests Ask oblivionC
They had no poet and they diedA
-
Dumb oracles and priests withdrawnC
Was it but flesh they deifiedA
Their gods were Ask oblivionC
They had no poet and they diedA
