Rhyme Scheme: ABABBCBC DEDEECEC FGFGGCGC HIHIIJCICA ghost is the freak of a sick man's brain | A |
Then why do ye start and shiver so | B |
That's the sob and drip of a leaky drain | A |
But it sounds like another noise we know | B |
The heavy drops drummed red and slow | B |
The drops ran down as slow as fate | C |
Do ye hear them still it was long ago | B |
But here in the shadows I wait I wait | C |
- | |
Spirits there be that pass in peace | D |
Mine passed in a whorl of wrath and dole | E |
And the hour that your choking breath shall cease | D |
I will get my grip on your naked soul | E |
Nor pity may stay nor prayer cajole | E |
I would drag ye whining from Hell's own gate | C |
To me to me ye must pay the toll | E |
And here in the shadows I wait I wait | C |
- | |
The dead they are dead they are out of the way | F |
And a ghost is the whim of an ailing mind | G |
Then why did ye whiten with fear to day | F |
When ye heard a voice in the calling wind | G |
Why did ye falter and look behind | G |
At the creeping mists when the hour grew late | C |
Ye would see my face were ye stricken blind | G |
And here in the shadows I wait I wait | C |
- | |
Drink and forget make merry and boast | H |
But the boast rings false and the jest is thin | I |
In the hour that I meet ye ghost to ghost | H |
Stripped of the flesh that ye skulk within | I |
Stripped to the coward soul 'ware of its sin | I |
Ye shall learn ye shall learn whether dead men | J |
hate | C |
Ah a weary time has the waiting been | I |
But here in the shadows I wait I wait | C |
