But see the body does not sinkA
It rides upon the tideB
A starbeam on the dagger's haftC
With staring eyes and wideB
And now up from the darkling seaD
Down from the failing moonE
Are come strange shapes to mock at meD
All pallid from the star pale seaD
White from the paling moonE
-
Or whirling fast or wheeling slowF
Around around the corpse they goF
All bloodless o'er the sickened seaD
Beneath the ailing moonE
-
And are they only wisps of fogG
That dance along the wavesH
Only shapes of mist the windI
Drives along the wavesH
Or are they spirits that the seaD
Has cheated of their gravesH
The ghosts of them that died at seaD
Of murdered men flung in the seaD
Whose bodies had no gravesH
Lost souls that haunt for evermoreJ
The sobbing reef and hollowed shoreJ
And always murmuring cavesH
-
Ah surely something more than fogG
More than starlit mistK
For starlight never makes a soundL
And fogs are ever whistL
But hearken hearken hearken nowM
For these sing as they danceN
-
As airily as eerilyD
They wheel about and whirlO
They jeer at me they fleer at meD
They flout me as they swirlO
As whirling fast or swaying slowF
Reeling wheeling to and froF
Around around the corpse they goF
They chill me with their chantsP
These be neither men nor mistsQ
Hearken to their chantsP
-
Ever ever everR
Drifting like a blossomS
Seaward with the starlightL
Wan upon her bosomS
Ever when the quickenedL
Heart of night is throbbingT
Ever when the tremblingT
Tide sets seaward sobbingT
Shall you see this burdenU
Borne upon its ebbingT
See her drifting seawardL
Like a broken blossomS
-
Ever see the starlightL
Kiss her bruised bosomS
-
Flight availeth nothingT
Still the subtle beachesV
Draw you back where HorrorR
Walks their shingled reachesV
Ever shall your spiritL
Hear the surf resoundingT
Evermore the oceanU
Thwarting you and boundingT
Vainly struggle inlandL
Lashing you and houndingT
Still the vision hales youW
From the upland reachesV
Goading you and grippingT
Binds you to the beachesV
-
Ever ever everR
Ever shall her laughterR
Hunting you and hauntingT
Mock and follow afterR
Rising where the buoy bellX
Clangs across the shallowsV
-
Leaping where the spindriftL
Hurtles o'er the hollowsV
Ringing where the moonlightL
Gleams along the billowsV
Ever ever everR
Ever shall her laughterR
Hounding you and hauntingT
Whip and follow afterR
