From The Bridge Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE GHAH IJKJ LMGM NOPO QRSR GTQF

Held and thrilled by the visionA
I stood as the twilight diedB
Where the great bridge soars like a songC
Over the crawling tideB
-
Stood on the middle archD
And night flooded in from the bayE
And wonderful under the starsF
Before me the city layE
-
Girdled with swinging watersG
Guarded by ship on shipH
A gem that the strong old oceanA
Held in his giant gripH
-
There was play of shadows aboveI
And drifting gleams belowJ
And magic of shifting wavesK
That darkle and glance and glowJ
-
Dusky and purple and splendidL
Banded with loops of lightM
The tall towers rose like pillarsG
Lifting the dome of nightM
-
The gliding cars of trafficN
Slid swiftly up and downO
Like monsters fiery mailedP
Leaping across the townO
-
Not planned with a thought of beautyQ
Built by a lawless breedR
Builded of lust for powerS
Builded of gold and greedR
-
Risen out of the trader'sG
Brutal and sordid warsT
And yet behold a cityQ
Wonderful under the starsF
