Leader no more be judged of usA
Hailed Chief and loved of yoreB
Youth and the faith of youth cry outC
Leader and Chief no moreB
-
We dreamed a Prophet flushed with faithD
Content to toil in painE
If that his sacrifice might beF
Somehow his people's gainE
-
We saw a vision and our bloodG
Beat red and hot and strongH
Lead us we cried to war againstI
Some foul embattled wrongH
-
We dreamed a Warrior whose swordJ
Was edged for sham and shameK
We dreamed a Statesman far aboveL
The vulgar lust for fameK
-
We were not cynics and we dreamedM
A Man who made no truceN
With lies nor ancient privilegeO
Nor old entrenched abuseN
-
We dreamed we dreamed Youth dreamedM
a dreamP
And even you forgotQ
Yourself one moment and dreamed tooR
Struck while your mood was hotQ
-
Struck three or four good blows and thenS
Turned back to easier thingsT
The cheap applause the blatant mobU
The praise of underlingsT
-
Praise praise was ever man so filledV
So avid still of praiseW
So hungry for the crowd's acclaimK
The sycophantic phraseW
-
O you whom Greatness beckoned toR
O swollen LittlenessW
Who turned from ImmortalityF
To fawn upon SuccessW
-
O blind with love of self who ledX
Youth's vision to defeatY
Bawling and brawling for rewardsW
Loud in the common streetY
-
O you who were so quick to judgeO
Leader and loved of yoreB
Hear now the judgment of our youthZ
Leader and Chief no moreB
