What Were They Like? Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHI BJKHLDMNOEPQCRSTUVWX YZ

Did the people of Viet NamA
use lanterns of stoneB
Did they hold ceremoniesC
to reverence the opening of budsD
Were they inclined to quiet laughterE
Did they use bone and ivoryF
jade and silver for ornamentG
Had they an epic poemH
Did they distinguish between speech and singingI
-
Sir their light hearts turned to stoneB
It is not remembered whether in gardensJ
stone gardens illumined pleasant waysK
Perhaps they gathered once to delight in blossomH
but after their children were killedL
there were no more budsD
Sir laughter is bitter to the burned mouthM
A dream ago perhaps Ornament is for joyN
All the bones were charredO
it is not remembered RememberE
most were peasants their lifeP
was in rice and bambooQ
When peaceful clouds were reflected in the paddiesC
and the water buffalo stepped surely along terracesR
maybe fathers told their sons old talesS
When bombs smashed those mirrorsT
there was time only to screamU
There is an echo yetV
of their speech which was like a songW
It was reported their singing resembledX
the flight of moths in moonlightY
Who can say It is silent nowZ
