Fully occupied with growing that'sA
the amaryllis Growing especiallyB
at night it would takeC
only a bit more patience than I've gotD
to sit keeping watch with it till daylightE
the naked eye could register every hour'sF
increase in height Like a child against a barn doorG
proudly topping each year's achievementH
steadily upI
goes each green stem smooth matteJ
traces of reddish purple at the base and almostK
imperceptible vertical ridgesL
running the length of themM
Two robust stems from each bulbN
sometimes with sturdy leaves for companyB
elegant sweeps of blade with rounded pointsO
Aloft the gravid buds shiny with fullnessP
-
One morning and so soon the first flowerQ
has opened when you wake Or you catch it poisedR
in a single briefS
moment of hesitationT
Next day anotherQ
shy at first like a foalU
even a third a fourthV
carried triumphantly at the summitW
of those strong columns and eachX
a Juno calm in brillianceY
a maiden giantess in modest splendorQ
If humans could beB
that intensely whole undistracted unhurriedZ
swift from sheerA2
unswerving impetus If we could blossomB2
out of ourselves givingC2
nothing imperfect withholding nothingC2
