Though the road turn at lastA
to death s ordinary doorB
and we knock there readyC
to enter and it opensD
easily for usE
yetF
all the long journeyC
we shall have gone in chainsG
fed on knowledge applesH
acrid and riddled with grubsI
-
-
We taste other food that lifeJ
like a charitable farm girlK
holds out to us as we passL
but our mouths are puckeredF
a taint of ash on the tongueM
-
-
It s not joy that we ve lostF
wildfire it flaresN
in dark or shine as it willO
What s goneP
is common happinessE
plain bread we could eatF
with the old apple of knowledgeQ
-
-
That old one it griped us sometimesR
but it was firm tartF
sometimes delectableS
-
-
The ashen apple of these daysT
grew from poisoned soil We are prisonersU
and must eatF
our ration All the long roadF
in chains even if after allV
we come toF
death s ordinary door with timeW
smiling its ordinaryC
long ago smileX
