trees and bushes rusted by Christmas frosts | B |
the yards and hillsides exhausted by five years of drought | C |

certain airy white blossoms punctually | D |
reappeared and dense clusters of pale pink dark pink | E |
a delicate abundance They seemed | F |
- | |
like guests arriving joyfully on the accustomed | G |
festival day unaware of the year's events not perceiving | H |
the sackcloth others were wearing | H |
- | |
To some of us the dejected landscape consorted well | D |
with our shame and bitterness Skies ever blue | D |
daily sunshine disgusted us like smile buttons | I |
- | |
Yet the blossoms clinging to thin branches | J |
more lightly than birds alert for flight | K |
lifted the sunken heart | L |
- | |
even against its will | D |
But not | M |
as symbols of hope they were flimsy | N |
as our resistance to the crimes committed | O |
- | |
again again in our name and yes they return | P |
year after year and yes they briefly shone with serene joy | Q |
over against the dark glare | R |

of evil days They are and their presence | S |
is quietness ineffable and the bombings are were | T |
no doubt will be that quiet that huge cacophany | P |
- | |
simultaneous No promise was being accorded the blossoms | U |
were not doves there was no rainbow And when it was claimed | V |
the war had ended it had not ended | O |
