is what we called her The story wasA
that her father had thrown Drano at herB
which was probably true given the way she slouchedC
through fifth grade afraid of the world recessD
especially She had acne scarsE
before she had acne poxs and dipsF
and bright red patchesG
I don't rememberB
any report in the papers I don't rememberB
my father telling me her father had gone to jailH
I never looked close to see the particularsI
of Crater Face's scars She was a blur a cartoonJ
melting Then when she healed her faceK
a million pebbles set in cementC
Even Comet BoyL
who got his name by being so abrasiveM
who made fun of everyone didn't make funN
of her She walked over the bridgeO
with the one other white girl who livedC
in her neighborhood Smoke curledC
like Slinkies from the factory stacksP
above themQ
I liked to imagine that Crater FaceK
went straight home like I did to watch Shirley TempleR
on channel I liked to imagine that she slippedC
into the screen bumping Shirley with her hipS
so that child actress slid out of frame into the tubesT
and wires that made the TV sputter when I turned it onU
Sometimes when I watched I'd see Crater FaceK
tap dancing with tall black men whose eyesV
looked shiny like the whites of hard boiled eggsW
I'd try to imagine that her block was fullX
of friendly folk with a lighthouse or goatsY
running in the streetC
It was my way of prayingZ
my way of un imagining the Drano pelletsA2
that must have smacked against herB
like a round of mini bulletsA2
her whole face as vulnerable as a tongueB2
wrapped in sizzling pizza cheeseC2
How she'd come home with homeworkD2
the weight of her books bending her into a wilting plantC
How her father called her slut bitch big baby slobE2
The hospital where she was forced to say it was an accidentC
Her face palpable as something glowing in a Petri dishF2
The bandages over her eyesV
In black and whiteC
with all that make up Crater Face almost looked prettyC
sure her MGM father was coming back soon from the warG2
seeing whole zoos in her thin orphanage soupH2
She looked happiest when she was filmedC
from the back sprinting into the futureB
fading into tiny gray dots on UHFM
