The Elephant Is Slow To Mate Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFG HIHI DJKJ LKLK MKNK

The elephant the huge old beastA
is slow to mateB
he finds a female they show no hasteC
they waitB
-
for the sympathy in their vast shy heartsD
slowly slowly to rouseE
as they loiter along the river bedsF
and drink and browseG
-
and dash in panic through the brakeH
of forest with the herdI
and sleep in massive silence and wakeH
together without a wordI
-
So slowly the great hot elephant heartsD
grow full of desireJ
and the great beasts mate in secret at lastK
hiding their fireJ
-
Oldest they are and the wisest of beastsL
so they know at lastK
how to wait for the loneliest of feastsL
for the full repastK
-
They do not snatch they do not tearM
their massive bloodK
moves as the moon tides near more nearN
till they touch in floodK
