Delicate mother KangarooA
Sitting up there rabbit wise but huge plump weightedB
And lifting her beautiful slender face oh so much moreC
gently and finely lined than a rabbit's or than a hare'sD
Lifting her face to nibble at a round white peppermint dropE
which she loves sensitive mother KangarooA
-
Her sensitive long pure bred faceF
Her full antipodal eyes so darkG
So big and quiet and remote having watched so manyH
empty dawns in silent AustraliaI
-
Her little loose hands and drooping Victorian shouldersJ
And then her great weight below the waist her vast pale bellyH
With a thin young yellow little paw hanging out andK
straggle of a long thin ear like ribbonL
Like a funny trimming to the middle of her belly thinM
little dangle of an immature paw and one thin earN
-
Her belly her big haunchesJ
And in addition the great muscular python stretch of her tailO
-
There she shan't have any more peppermint dropsJ
So she wistfully sensitively sniffs the air and then turnsJ
goes off in slow sad leapsJ
On the long flat skis of her legsJ
Steered and propelled by that steel strong snake of a tailO
-
Stops again half turns inquisitive to look backP
While something stirs quickly in her belly and a lean littleQ
face comes out as from a windowR
Peaked and a bit dismayedS
Only to disappear again quickly away from the sight of theI
world to snuggle down in the warmthT
Leaving the trail of a different paw hanging outU
-
Still she watches with eternal cocked wistfulnessJ
How full her eyes are like the full fathomless shiningV
eyes of an Australian black boyW
Who has been lost so many centuries on the margins ofX
existenceJ
She watches with insatiable wistfulnessJ
Untold centuries of watching for something to comeY
For a new signal from life in that silent lost land of theI
SouthZ
-
Where nothing bites but insects and snakes and the sunL
small lifeA2
Where no bull roared no cow ever lowed no stag criedB2
no leopard screeched no lion coughed no dog barkedC2
But all was silent save for parrots occasionally in theI
haunted blue bushD2
-
Wistfully watching with wonderful liquid eyesJ
And all her weight all her blood dropping sackwise downE2
towards the earth's centreF2
And the live little one taking in its paw at the door of herF2
bellyH
