How Beastly The Bourgeois Is Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AB CD EFGHIJ KLMNJJOPQR AB SONNT JFOQ UOA VWLOW

How beastly the bourgeois isA
especially the male of the speciesB
-
Presentable eminently presentableC
shall I make you a present of himD
-
Isn't he handsome Isn't he healthy Isn't he a fine specimenE
Doesn't he look the fresh clean Englishman outsideF
Isn't it God's own image tramping his thirty miles a dayG
after partridges or a little rubber ballH
wouldn't you like to be like that well off and quite theI
thingJ
-
Oh but waitK
Let him meet a new emotion let him be faced with anotherL
man's needM
let him come home to a bit of moral difficulty let lifeN
face him with a new demand on his understandingJ
and then watch him go soggy like a wet meringueJ
Watch him turn into a mess either a fool or a bullyO
Just watch the display of him confronted with a newP
demand on his intelligenceQ
a new life demandR
-
How beastly the bourgeois isA
especially the male of the speciesB
-
Nicely groomed like a mushroomS
standing there so sleek and erect and eyeableO
and like a fungus living on the remains of a bygone lifeN
sucking his life out of the dead leaves of greater lifeN
than his ownT
-
And even so he's stale he's been there too longJ
Touch him and you'll find he's all gone insideF
just like an old mushroom all wormy inside and hollowO
under a smooth skin and an upright appearanceQ
-
Full of seething wormy hollow feelingsU
rather nastyO
How beastly the bourgeois isA
-
Standing in their thousands these appearances in dampV
EnglandW
what a pity they can't all be kicked overL
like sickening toadstools and left to melt back swiftlyO
into the soil of EnglandW
