At evening sitting on this terraceA
When the sun from the west beyond Pisa beyond the mountains of CarraraB
Departs and the world is taken by surpriseC
-
When the tired flower of Florence is in gloom beneath the glowingD
Brown hills surroundingD
-
When under the arches of the Ponte VecchioE
A green light enters against stream flush from the westF
Against the current of obscure ArnoE
-
Look up and you see things flyingD
Between the day and the nightG
Swallows with spools of dark thread sewing the shadows togetherH
-
A circle swoop and a quick parabola under the bridge archesI
Where light pushes throughJ
A sudden turning upon itself of a thing in the airK
A dip to the waterH
-
And you thinkL
'The swallows are flying so late '-
-
SwallowsM
-
Dark air life loopingD
Yet missing the pure loopN
A twitch a twitter an elastic shudder in flightG
And serrated wings against the skyO
Like a glove a black glove thrown up at the lightG
And falling backP
-
Never swallowsM
BatsQ
The swallows are goneR
-
At a wavering instant the swallows gave way to batsQ
By the Ponte VecchioE
Changing guardS
-
Bats and an uneasy creeping in one's scalpT
As the bats swoop overheadU
Flying madlyV
-
PipistrelloV
Black piper on an infinitesimal pipeW
Little lumps that fly in air and have voices indefinite wildly vindictiveX
-
Wings like bits of umbrellaV
-
BatsQ
-
Creatures that hang themselves up like an old rag to sleepY
And disgustingly upside downZ
-
Hanging upside down like rows of disgusting old ragsA2
And grinning in their sleepY
BatsQ
-
Not for meV
