I Her sons pursue the butterfliesA
Her baby daughter mocks the dovesB
With throbbing coo in his fond eyesA
She's Venus with her little LovesB
Her footfall dignifies the earthC
Her form's the native land of graceD
And lo his coming lights with mirthC
Its court and capital her faceD
Full proud her favour makes her lordE
And that her flatter'd bosom knowsF
She takes his arm without a wordG
In lanes of laurel and of roseF
Ten years to day has she been hisH
He but begins to understandI
He says the dignity and blissJ
She gave him when she gave her handI
She answering says he disenchantsJ
The past though that was perfect heK
Rejoins the present nothing wantsJ
But briefness to be ecstasyK
He lauds her charms her beauty's glowL
Wins from the spoiler Time new raysJ
Bright looks reply approving soL
Beauty's elixir vit praiseJ
Upon a beech he bids her markM
Where ten years since he carved her nameN
It grows there with the growing barkM
And in his heart it grows the sameN
For that her soft arm presses hisJ
Close to her fond maternal breastO
He tells her each new kindness isJ
The effectual sum of all the restO
And whilst the cushat mocking coo'dO
They blest the days they had been wedO
At cost of those in which he woo'dO
Till everything was three times saidO
And words were growing vain when BriggsJ
Factotum Footman Butler GroomP
Who press'd the cyder fed the pigsJ
Preserv'd the rabbits drove the broughamQ
And help'd at need to mow the lawnsJ
And sweep the paths and thatch the hayR
Here brought the Post down Mrs Vaughan'sJ
Sole rival but for once to dayR
Scarce look'd at for the Second BookS
Till this tenth festival kept closeJ
Was thus commenced while o'er them shookS
The laurel married with the roseJ
-
II-
The pulse of War whose bloody heatsJ
Sane purposes insanely workT
Now with fraternal frenzy beatsJ
And binds the Christian to the TurkT
And shrieking fifesJ
-
-
III-
But with a roarU
In rush'd the Loves the tallest roll'dO
A hedgehog from his pinaforeU
Which saved his fingers Baby boldO
Touch'd it and stared and scream'd for lifeV
And stretch'd her hand for Vaughan to kissJ
Who hugg'd his Pet and ask'd his wifeV
Is this for love or love for thisJ
But she turn'd pale for lo the beastO
Found stock still in the rabbit trapW
And feigning so to be deceasedO
And laid by Frank upon her lapW
Unglobed himself and show'd his snoutO
And fell scatt'ring the Loves amainX
With shriek with laughter and with shoutO
And peace at last restored againX
The Bard who this untimely hitchY
Bore with a calm magnanimousJ
The hedgehog roll'd into a ditchY
And Venus sooth'd proceeded thusJ
