-
-
I thought I had forever lostB
Alas though still so youngC
The tender joys and sorrows allD
That unto youth belongE
-
The sufferings sweet the impulsesF
Our inmost hearts that warmG
Whatever gives this life of oursH
Its value and its charmI
-
What sore laments what bitter tearsJ
O'er my sad state I shedK
When first I felt from my cold heartL
Its gentle pains had fledK
-
Its throbs I felt no more my loveM
Within me seemed to dieN
Nor from my frozen senseless breastO
Escaped a single sighN
-
I wept o'er my sad hapless lotP
The life of life seemed lostB
The earth an arid wildernessQ
Locked in eternal frostB
-
The day how dreary and the nightR
How dull and dark and loneS
The moon for me no brightness hadT
No star in heaven shoneS
-
And yet the old love was the causeU
Of all the tears I shedK
Still in my inmost breast I feltV
The heart was not yet deadK
-
My weary fancy still would craveW
The images it lovedX
And its capricious longings stillY
A source of sorrow provedZ
-
But e'en that lingering spark of griefA2
Was soon within me spentB2
And I the strength no longer hadT
To utter a lamentB2
-
And there I lay stunned stupefiedB2
Nor asked for comfort moreC2
My heart to hopeless blank despairD2
Itself had given o'erE2
-
How changed alas was I from himF2
Who once with passion thrilledB2
Whose ardent soul was ever onceG2
With sweet illusions filledB2
-
The swallow to my window stillY
Would come to greet the dawnH2
But his sweet song no echo foundB2
In my poor heart forlornI2
-
Nor pleased me more in autumn grayJ2
Upon the hill side loneS
The cheerful vesper bell or lightB2
Of the departing sunK2
-
In vain the evening star I sawL2
Above the silent valeM2
And vainly warbled in the groveN2
The plaintive nightingaleM2
-
And you ye furtive glances brightB2
From gentle eyes that roveN2
The sweet the gracious messagesO2
Of first immortal LoveM
-
The soft white hand that tenderlyP2
My own hand seemed to wooQ2
All all your magic spells were vainR2
My torpor to subdueQ2
-
Of every pleasure quite bereftB2
Sad but of tranquil mienS2
A state of perfect littlenessO2
Yet with a face sereneS2
-
Save for the lingering wish indeedB2
In death to sink to restB2
The force of all desire was spentB2
In my exhausted breastB2
-
As some poor feeble wandererE2
With age and sorrow bentB2
The April of my years alasO2
Thus listlessly I spentB2
-
Thus listlessly thus wearilyP2
Didst thou consume O heartB2
Those golden days ineffableT2
So swiftly that departB2
-
Who from this heavy heedless restB2
Awakens me againU2
What new what magic power is thisO2
I feel within me reignR2
-
Ye motions sweet ye imagesO2
Ye throbs illusions blestB2
Ah no ye are not then shut outB2
Forever from this breastB2
-
The glorious light of golden daysO2
Do ye again unfoldB2
The old affections that I lostB2
Do I once more beholdB2
-
Now as I gaze upon the skyN
Or on the verdant fieldsO2
Each thing with sorrow me inspiresO2
And each a pleasure yieldsO2
-
The mountain forest and the shoreC2
Once more my heart rejoiceO2
The fountain speaks to me once moreC2
The sea hath found a voiceO2
-
Who after all this apathyP2
Restores to me my tearsO2
Each moment as I look aroundB2
How changed the world appearsO2
-
Hath hope perchance O my poor heartB2
Beguiled thee of thy painR2
Ah no the gracious smile of hopeV2
I ne'er shall see againU2
-
Nature bestowed these impulsesO2
And these illusions blestB2
Their inborn influence in meP2
By suffering was suppressedB2
-
But not annulled not overcomeW2
By cruel blows of FateB2
Nor by the inauspicious frownX2
Of Truth importunateB2
-
I know she has no sympathyP2
For fond imaginingsO2
I know that Nature too is deafY2
Nor heeds our sufferingsO2
-
That for our good she nothing caresO2
Our being only heedsO2
And with the sight of our distressO2
Her wild caprices feedsO2
-
I know the poor man pleads in vainR2
For others' sympathyP2
That scornfully or heedlesslyT2
All from his presence fleeT2
-
That both for genius and for worthZ2
This age has no respectB2
That all who cherish lofty aimsO2
Are left to cold neglectB2
-
And you ye eyes so tremulousO2
With lustre all divineA3
I know how false your splendors areB3
Where no true love doth shineA3
-
No love mysterious and profoundB2
Illumes you with its glowT2
Nor gleams one spark of genial fireE2
Beneath that breast of snowT2
-
Nay it is wont to laugh to scornI2
Another's tender painR2
The fervent flame of heavenly loveM
To treat with cold disdainR2
-
Yet I with thankfulness once moreC2
The old illusions greetB2
And feel with shock of pleased surpriseO2
The heart within me beatB2
-
To thee alone this force renewedB2
This vital power I oweT2
From thee alone my faithful heartB2
My only comforts flowT2
-
I feel it is the destinyT2
Of every noble mindB2
In Fate in Fortune Beauty and the WorldB2
An enemy to findB2
-
But while thou liv'st nor yield'st to FateB2
Contending without fearC3
I will not tax with crueltyT2
The power that placed me hereD3
