Thou from the top of yonder antique towerA
O lonely sparrow wandering hast goneB
Thy song repeating till the day is doneC
And through this valley strays the harmonyD
How Spring rejoices in the fields aroundE
And fills the air with lightF
So that the heart is melted at the sightF
Hark to the bleating flocks the lowing herdsG
In sweet content the other birdsG
Through the free sky in emulous circles wheelH
In pure enjoyment of their happy timeI
Thou pensive gazest on the scene apartJ
Nor wilt thou join them in the merry roundE
Shy playmate thou for mirth hast little heartJ
And with thy plaintive music dost consumeK
Both of the year and of thy life the bloomK
-
Alas how much my waysL
Resemble thine The laughter and the sportM
That fill with glee our youthful daysL
And thee O love who art youth's brother stillN
Too oft the bitter sigh of later yearsO
I care not for I know not whyP
But from them ever distant flyP
Here in my native placeQ
As if of alien raceQ
My spring of life I like a hermit passR
This day that to the evening now gives wayS
Is in our town an ancient holidayS
Hark through the air that voice of festal bellT
While rustic guns in frequent thunders soundE
Reverberated from the hills aroundE
In festal robes arrayedU
The neighboring youthV
Their houses leaving o'er the roads are spreadW
They pleasant looks exchange and in their heartsX
Rejoice I lonely in this distant spotY
Along the country wanderingZ
Postpone all pleasure and delightF
To some more genial time meanwhileA2
As through the sunny air around I gazeL
My brow is smitten by his raysL
As after such a day sereneB2
Dropping behind yon distant hillsC2
He vanishes and seems to sayS
That thus all happy youth must pass awayS
-
Thou lonely little bird when thouD2
Hast reached the evening of the daysL
Thy stars assign to theeD
Wilt surely not regret thy waysL
For all thy wishes areE2
Obedient to Nature's law But ahF2
If I in spite of all my prayersG2
Am doomed the hateful threshold of old ageH2
To cross when these dull eyes will giveI2
No response to another's heartJ
The world to them a void will beD
Each day become more full of miseryD
How then will this my wish appearJ2
In those dark hours that dungeon drearJ2
My blighted youth my sore distressK2
Alas will then seem happinessL2
