The night is mild and clear and without windA
And o'er the roofs and o'er the gardens roundB
The moon shines soft and from afar revealsC
Each mountain peak serene O lady mineD
Hushed now is every path and few and dimE
The lamps that glimmer through the balconiesF
Thou sleepest in thy quiet rooms how lightG
And easy is thy sleep No care thy heartH
Consumes and little dost thou know or thinkI
How deep a wound thou in my heart hast madeJ
Thou sleepest I to yonder heaven turnK
That seems to greet me with a loving smileL
And to that Nature old omnipotentM
That doomed me still to suffer 'I to theeN
All hope deny ' she said 'e'en hope nor mayO
Those eyes of thine e'er shine save through their tears 'P
-
This was a holiday its pleasures o'erQ
Thou seek'st repose and happy in thy dreamsR
Recallest those whom thou hast pleased to dayO
And those who have pleased thee not I indeedS
I hoped it not unto thy thoughts occurQ
Meanwhile I ask how much of life remainsT
To me and on the earth I cast myselfU
And cry and groan How wretched are my daysV
And still so young Hark on the road I hearW
Not far away the solitary songX
Of workman who returns at this late hourQ
In merry mood unto his humble homeY
And in my heart a cruel pang I feelZ
At thought how all things earthly pass awayO
And leave no trace behind This festal dayO
Hath fled a working day now follows itA2
And all alike are swept away by TimeB2
Where is the glory of the antique nations nowC2
Where now the fame of our great ancestorsD2
The empire vast of Rome the clash of armsE2
Now all is peace and silence all the worldF2
At rest their very names are heard no moreG2
E'en from my earliest years when weN
Expect so eagerly a holidayO
The moment it was past I sought my couchH2
Wakeful and sad and at the midnight hourQ
When I the song heard of some passer byI2
That slowly in the distance died awayO
The same deep anguish felt I in my heartH
