It was the morning through the shutters closedA
Along the balcony the earliest raysB
Of sunlight my dark room were enteringC
When at the time that sleep upon our eyesD
Its softest and most grateful shadows castsE
There stood beside me looking in my faceF
The image dear of her who taught me firstG
To love then left me to lament her lossH
To me she seemed not dead but sad with suchI
A countenance as the unhappy wearJ
Her right hand near my head she sighing placedK
'Dost thou still live ' she said to me 'and dostL
Thou still remember what we were and are 'M
And I replied 'Whence comest thou and howN
Beloved and beautiful Oh how how IO
Have grieved still grieve for thee Nor did I thinkP
Thou e'er couldst know it more and oh that thoughtQ
My sorrow rendered more disconsolateQ
But art thou now again to leave meR
I fear so Say what hath befallen theeR
Art thou the same What preys upon thee thus 'M
'Oblivion weighs upon thy thoughts and sleepS
Envelops them ' she answered 'I am deadQ
And many months have passed since last we met 'M
What grief oppressed me as these words I heardQ
And she continued 'In the flower of youthT
Cut off when life is sweetest and beforeU
The heart that lesson sad and sure hath learntQ
The utter vanity of human hopeV
The sick man may e'en covet as a boonW
That which withdraws him from all sufferingC
But to the young Death comes disconsolateQ
And hard the fate of hope that in the graveX
Is quenched And yet how vain that knowledge isY
That Nature from the inexperienced hidesZ
And a blind sorrow is to be preferredQ
To wisdom premature ' 'Hush hush ' I criedQ
'Unhappy one and dear My heart is crushedQ
With these thy words And art thou dead indeedQ
O my beloved and am I still aliveA2
And was it then in heaven decreed that thisB2
Thy tender body the last damps of deathC2
Should feel and my poor wretched frame remainD2
Unharmed Oh often often as I thinkP
That thou no longer livest and that IO
Shall never see thee on the earth againE2
Incredible it seems Alas alasF2
What is this thing that they call death Oh wouldQ
That I this day the mystery could solveG2
And my defenceless head withdraw from Fate'sF2
Relentless hate I still am young and stillH2
Feel all the blight and misery of ageI2
Which I so dread and distant far it seemsF2
But ah how little different from ageI2
The flower of my years ' 'We both were born 'M
She said 'to weep unhappy were our livesF2
And heaven took pleasure in our sufferings 'M
'Oh if my eyes with tears ' I added 'thenE2
My face with pallor veiled thou seest for lossF2
Of thee and anguish weighing on my heartQ
Tell me was any spark of pity or of loveJ2
For the poor lover kindled in thy heartQ
While thou didst live I then between my hopeV
And my despair passed weary nights and daysF2
And now my mind is with vain doubts oppressedQ
Oh if but once compassion smote thee forU
My darkened life conceal it not from meR
I pray thee let the memory console meR
Since of their future our young days were robbed 'M
And she 'Be comforted unhappy oneE2
I was not churlish of my pity whilstQ
I lived and am not now myself so wretchedQ
Oh do not chide this most unhappy child 'M
'By all our sufferings and by the loveJ2
Which preys upon me ' I exclaimed 'and byO
Our youth and by the hope that faded fromK2
Our lives O let me dearest touch thy hand 'M
And sweetly sadly she extended itQ
And while I covered it with kisses whileL2
With sorrow and with rapture quiveringC
I to my panting bosom fondly pressed itQ
With fervent passion glowed my face and breastQ
My trembling voice refused its utteranceF2
And all things swam before my sight when sheR
Her eyes fixed tenderly on mine repliedQ
'And dost thou then forget dear friend that IO
Am of my beauty utterly deprivedQ
And vainly thou unhappy one dost yieldQ
To passion's transports Now a last farewellM2
Our wretched minds our feeble bodies tooQ
Eternally are parted Thou to meR
No longer livest nevermore shall liveA2
Fate hath annulled the faith that thou hast sworn 'M
Then in my anguish as I seemed to cryO
Aloud convulsed my eyes o'erflowing withN2
The tears of utter helpless miseryR
I started from my sleep The image stillH2
Was seen and in the sun's uncertain lightQ
Above my couch she seemed to linger stillH2
