The conflict fierce of love I felt and said | B |
If this be love how hard it is to bear | C |
- | |
With eyes still fixed intent upon the ground | D |
I saw but her whose artless innocence | E |
Triumphant took possession of this heart | F |
- | |
Ah Love how badly hast thou governed me | G |
Why should affection so sincere and pure | H |
Bring with it such desire such suffering | I |
- | |
Why not serene and full and free from guile | J |
But sorrow laden and lamenting sore | K |
Should joy so great into my heart descend | L |
- | |
O tell me tender heart that sufferest so | M |
Why with that thought such anguish should be blent | L |
Compared with which all other thoughts were naught | L |
- | |
That thought that ever present in the day | L |
That in the night more vivid still appeared | L |
When all things round in sweet sleep seemed to rest | L |
- | |
Thou restless both with joy and misery | G |
Didst with thy constant throbbings weary so | M |
My breast as panting in my bed I lay | L |
- | |
And when worn out with grief and weariness | N |
In sleep my eyes I closed ah no relief | O |
It gave so broken and so feverish | P |
- | |
How brightly from the depths of darkness then | Q |
The lovely image rose and my closed eyes | R |
Beneath their lids their gaze upon it fed | L |
- | |
O what delicious impulses diffused | L |
My weary frame with sweet emotion filled | L |
What myriad thoughts unstable and confused | L |
- | |
Were floating in my mind As through the leaves | S |
Of some old grove the west wind wandering | I |
A long mysterious murmur leaves behind | L |
- | |
And as I silent to their influence yield | L |
What saidst thou heart when she departed who | T |
Had caused thee all thy throbs and suffering | I |
- | |
No sooner had I felt within the heat | L |
Of love's first flame than with it flew away | L |
The gentle breeze that fanned it into life | U |
- | |
Sleepless I lay until the dawn of day | L |
The steeds that were to leave me desolate | L |
Their hoofs were beating at my father's gate | L |
- | |
And I in mute suspense poor timid fool | V |
With eye that vainly would the darkness pierce | W |
And eager ear intent lay listening | I |
- | |
That voice to hear if for the last time I | X |
Might catch the accents from those lovely lips | Y |
The voice alone all else forever lost | L |
- | |
How many vulgar tones my doubtful ear | Z |
Would smite with deep disgust inspiring me | G |
With doubt tormented holding hard my breath | A2 |
- | |
And when at last that voice into my heart | L |
Descended passing sweet and when the sound | L |
Of horses and of wheels had died away | L |
- | |
In utter desolation then my head | L |
I in my pillow buried closed my eyes | R |
And pressed my hand against my heart and sighed | L |
- | |
Then listlessly my trembling knees across | B2 |
The silent chamber dragging I exclaimed | L |
'Nothing on earth can interest me more ' | - |
- | |
The bitter recollection cherishing | I |
Within my breast to every voice my heart | L |
To every face insensible remained | L |
- | |
Long I remained in hopeless sorrow drowned | L |
As when the heavens far and wide their showers | C2 |
Incessant pour upon the fields around | L |
- | |
Nor had I Love thy cruel power known | D2 |
A boy of eighteen summers flown until | E2 |
That day when I thy bitter lesson learned | L |
- | |
When I each pleasure held in scorn nor cared | L |
The shining stars to see or meadows green | F2 |
Or felt the charm of holy morning light | L |
- | |
The love of glory too no longer found | L |
An echo in my irresponsive breast | L |
That once the love of beauty with it shared | L |
- | |
My favorite studies I neglected quite | L |
And those things vain appeared compared with which | G2 |
I used to think all other pleasures vain | H2 |
- | |
Ah how could I have changed so utterly | G |
How could one passion all the rest destroy | I2 |
Indeed what helpless mortals are we all | J2 |
- | |
My heart my only comfort was and with | K2 |
That heart in conference perpetual | L2 |
A constant watch upon my grief to keep | M2 |
- | |
My eye still sought the ground or in itself | N2 |
Absorbed shrank from encountering the glance | O2 |
Of lovely or unlovely countenance | E |
- | |
The stainless image fearing to disturb | P2 |
So faithfully reflected in my breast | L |
As winds disturb the mirror of the lake | Q2 |
- | |
And that regret that I could not enjoy | I2 |
Such happiness which weighs upon the mind | L |
And turns to poison pleasure that has passed | L |
- | |
Did still its thorn within my bosom lodge | R2 |
As I the past recalled but shame indeed | L |
Left not its cruel sting within this heart | L |
- | |
To heaven to you ye gentle souls I swear | C |
No base desire intruded on my thought | L |
But with a pure and sacred flame I burned | L |
- | |
That flame still lives and that affection pure | H |
Still in my thought that lovely image breathes | S2 |
From which save heavenly I no other joy | I2 |
- | |
Have ever known my only comfort now | T2 |
