Ah well can I the day recall when firstA
The conflict fierce of love I felt and saidB
If this be love how hard it is to bearC
-
With eyes still fixed intent upon the groundD
I saw but her whose artless innocenceE
Triumphant took possession of this heartF
-
Ah Love how badly hast thou governed meG
Why should affection so sincere and pureH
Bring with it such desire such sufferingI
-
Why not serene and full and free from guileJ
But sorrow laden and lamenting soreK
Should joy so great into my heart descendL
-
O tell me tender heart that sufferest soM
Why with that thought such anguish should be blentL
Compared with which all other thoughts were naughtL
-
That thought that ever present in the dayL
That in the night more vivid still appearedL
When all things round in sweet sleep seemed to restL
-
Thou restless both with joy and miseryG
Didst with thy constant throbbings weary soM
My breast as panting in my bed I layL
-
And when worn out with grief and wearinessN
In sleep my eyes I closed ah no reliefO
It gave so broken and so feverishP
-
How brightly from the depths of darkness thenQ
The lovely image rose and my closed eyesR
Beneath their lids their gaze upon it fedL
-
O what delicious impulses diffusedL
My weary frame with sweet emotion filledL
What myriad thoughts unstable and confusedL
-
Were floating in my mind As through the leavesS
Of some old grove the west wind wanderingI
A long mysterious murmur leaves behindL
-
And as I silent to their influence yieldL
What saidst thou heart when she departed whoT
Had caused thee all thy throbs and sufferingI
-
No sooner had I felt within the heatL
Of love's first flame than with it flew awayL
The gentle breeze that fanned it into lifeU
-
Sleepless I lay until the dawn of dayL
The steeds that were to leave me desolateL
Their hoofs were beating at my father's gateL
-
And I in mute suspense poor timid foolV
With eye that vainly would the darkness pierceW
And eager ear intent lay listeningI
-
That voice to hear if for the last time IX
Might catch the accents from those lovely lipsY
The voice alone all else forever lostL
-
How many vulgar tones my doubtful earZ
Would smite with deep disgust inspiring meG
With doubt tormented holding hard my breathA2
-
And when at last that voice into my heartL
Descended passing sweet and when the soundL
Of horses and of wheels had died awayL
-
In utter desolation then my headL
I in my pillow buried closed my eyesR
And pressed my hand against my heart and sighedL
-
Then listlessly my trembling knees acrossB2
The silent chamber dragging I exclaimedL
'Nothing on earth can interest me more '-
-
The bitter recollection cherishingI
Within my breast to every voice my heartL
To every face insensible remainedL
-
Long I remained in hopeless sorrow drownedL
As when the heavens far and wide their showersC2
Incessant pour upon the fields aroundL
-
Nor had I Love thy cruel power knownD2
A boy of eighteen summers flown untilE2
That day when I thy bitter lesson learnedL
-
When I each pleasure held in scorn nor caredL
The shining stars to see or meadows greenF2
Or felt the charm of holy morning lightL
-
The love of glory too no longer foundL
An echo in my irresponsive breastL
That once the love of beauty with it sharedL
-
My favorite studies I neglected quiteL
And those things vain appeared compared with whichG2
I used to think all other pleasures vainH2
-
Ah how could I have changed so utterlyG
How could one passion all the rest destroyI2
Indeed what helpless mortals are we allJ2
-
My heart my only comfort was and withK2
That heart in conference perpetualL2
A constant watch upon my grief to keepM2
-
My eye still sought the ground or in itselfN2
Absorbed shrank from encountering the glanceO2
Of lovely or unlovely countenanceE
-
The stainless image fearing to disturbP2
So faithfully reflected in my breastL
As winds disturb the mirror of the lakeQ2
-
And that regret that I could not enjoyI2
Such happiness which weighs upon the mindL
And turns to poison pleasure that has passedL
-
Did still its thorn within my bosom lodgeR2
As I the past recalled but shame indeedL
Left not its cruel sting within this heartL
-
To heaven to you ye gentle souls I swearC
No base desire intruded on my thoughtL
But with a pure and sacred flame I burnedL
-
That flame still lives and that affection pureH
Still in my thought that lovely image breathesS2
From which save heavenly I no other joyI2
-
Have ever known my only comfort nowT2
