Approaching now the end of his abodeA
On earth Consalvo lay complaining onceB
Of his hard fate but now quite reconciledC
When in the midst of his fifth lustre o'erD
His head oblivion so longed for hungE
As for some time so on his dying dayF
He lay abandoned by his dearest friendsG
For in the world few friends to him will clingH
Who shows that he is weary of the worldI
Yet she was at his side by pity ledJ
In his lone wretchedness to comfort himK
Who was alone and ever in his thoughtL
Elvira for her loveliness renownedM
And knowing well her power that a lookN
A single sweet and gracious word from herD
A thousand fold repeated in the heartO
Devoted of her hapless lover stillP
His consolation and support had beenQ
Although no word of love had she from himK
E'er heard For ever in his soul the powerD
Of great desire had been rebuked and crushedR
By sovereign fear So great a child and slaveS
Had he become through his excess of loveT
But death at last the cruel silence brokeU
For being by sure signs convinced that nowV
The day of his deliverance had comeW
Her white hand taking as she was aboutX
To leave and gently pressing it he saidJ
'Thou goest it is time for thee to goY
Farewell Elvira I shall never seeZ
Thee more too well I know it so farewellA2
I thank thee for thy gentle sympathyZ
So far as my poor lips my thanks can speakB2
He will reward thee who alone has powerD
If heaven e'er rewards the merciful 'C2
Pale turned the fair one at these words a sighD2
Her bosom heaved for e'en a stranger's heartO
A throb responsive feels when she departsE2
And says farewell forever Fain would sheZ
Have contradicted him the near approachF2
Of fate concealing from the dying manG2
But he her thought anticipating saidJ
'Ah much desired as well thou knowest deathH2
Much prayed for and not dreaded comes to meZ
Nay joyful seems to me this fatal dayF
Save for the thought of losing thee foreverD
Alas forever do I part from theeZ
In saying this my heart is rent in twainI2
Those eyes I shall no more behold nor hearJ2
Thy voice But O Elvira say beforeK2
Thou leavest me forever wilt thou notL2
One kiss bestow A single kiss in allM2
My life A favor asked who can denyD2
Unto a dying man Of the sweet giftN2
I ne'er can boast so near my end whose lipsO2
To day will by a stranger's hand be closedP2
Forever ' Saying this with a deep sighD2
Her hand beloved he with his cold lips pressedQ2
-
The lovely woman stood irresoluteQ2
And thoughtful for a moment with her lookN
In which a thousand charms were radiantQ2
Intent on that of the unhappy manG2
Where the last tear was glittering Nor wouldQ2
Her heart permit her to refuse with scornR2
His wish and by refusal make more sadQ2
The sad farewell but she compassion tookN
Upon his love which she had known so longS2
And that celestial face that mouth which heZ
So long had coveted which had for yearsT2
The burden been of all his dreams and sighsU2
Close bringing unto his so sad and wanV2
Discolored by his mortal agonyZ
Kiss after kiss all goodness with a lookN
Of deep compassion on the trembling lipsO2
Of the enraptured lover she impressedQ2
-
What didst thou then become How in thy eyesU2
Appeared life death and all thy sufferingH
Consalvo in thy flight now pausing HeZ
The hand which still he held of his belovedQ2
Elvira placing on his heart whose lastQ2
Pulsations love with death was sharing saidQ2
'Elvira my Elvira am I stillP
On earth Those lips were they thy lips O sayF
And do I press thy hand Alas it seemsW2
A dead man's vision or a dream or thingH
Incredible How much Elvira OY
How much I owe to death Long has my loveT
Been known to thee and unto others forK2
True love cannot be hidden on the earthX2
Too manifest it was to thee in looksY2
In acts in my unhappy countenanceB
But never in my words For then and nowV
Forever would the passion infiniteQ2
That rules my heart be silent had not deathH2
With courage filled it I shall die contentQ2
Henceforth with destiny no more regretQ2
That I e'er saw the light I have not livedQ2
In vain now that my lips have been allowedQ2
Thy lips to press Nay happy I esteemZ2
My lot Two precious things the world still givesA3
To mortals Love and Death To one heaven guidesB3
Me now in youth and in the other ID2
Am fortunate Ah hadst thou once but onceB
Responded to my long enduring loveT
To my changed eyes this earth for evermoreK2
Had been transformed into a ParadiseC3
E'en to old age detestable old ageD3
Could I have been resigned and reconciledQ2
To bear its heavy load the memoryZ
Of one transcendent moment had sufficedQ2
When I was happier than the happiestQ2
But ah such bliss supreme the envious godsE3
To earthly natures ne'er have given LoveT
In such excess ne'er leads to happinessF3
And yet thy love to win I would have borneR2
The tortures of the executionerD
Have faced the rack and fagot dauntlesslyP
Would from thy loving arms have rushed intoQ2
The fearful flames of hell with cheerfulnessF3
-
'Elvira O Elvira happy heZ
Beyond all mortal happiness on whomG3
Thou dost the smile of love bestow And nextQ2
Is he who can lay down his life for theeZ
It is permitted it is not a dreamZ2
As I alas have always fancied itQ2
To man on earth true happiness to findQ2
I knew it well the day I looked on theeZ
That look to me indeed has fatal beenQ
And yet I could not bring myself midst allP
My sufferings that cruel day to blameH3
-
'Now live Elvira happy and adornR2
The world with thy fair countenance None e'erD
Will love thee as I loved thee Such a loveT
Will ne'er be seen on earth How much alasF3
How long a time by poor Consalvo hastQ2
Thou been with sighs and bitter tears invokedQ2
How when I heard thy name have I turned paleP
How have I trembled and been sick at heartQ2
As timidly thy threshold I approachedQ2
At that angelic voice at sight of thatQ2
Fair brow I who now tremble not at deathH2
But breath and life no longer will respondQ2
Unto the voice of love The time has passedQ2
Nor can I e'er this happy day recallP
Farewell Elvira With its vital sparkI3
Thy image so beloved is from my heartQ2
Forever fading Oh farewell If thisF3
My love offend thee not to morrow eveJ3
One sigh wilt thou bestow upon my bier '-
He ceased and soon he lost his consciousnessF3
Ere evening came his first his only dayF
Of happiness had faded from his sightQ2
