All night through the eternity of nightB
Pain was my potion though I could not feelC
Deep in my humbled heart you ground your heelC
Till I was reft of even my inner lightB
Till reason from my mind had taken flightB
And all my world went whirling in a reelC
And all my swarthy strength turned cold like steelC
A passive mass beneath your puny mightB
Last night I gave you triumph over meD
So I should be myself as once beforeE
I marveled at your shallow mysteryD
And haunted hungrily your temple doorE
I gave you sum and substance to be freeD
Oh you shall never triumph any moreE

I do not fear to face the fact and sayF
How darkly dull my living hours have grownG
My wounded heart sinks heavier than stoneG
Because I loved you longer than a dayF
I do not shame to turn myself awayF
From beckoning flowers beautifully blownG
To mourn your vivid memory aloneG
In mountain fastnesses austerely grayF
The mists will shroud me on the utter heightB
The salty brimming waters of my breastH
Will mingle with the fresh dews of the nightB
To bathe my spirit hankering to restH
But after sleep I'll wake with greater mightB
Once more to venture on the eternal questH
