Reg wished me to go with him to the fieldB
I paused because I did not want to goC
But in her quiet way she made me yieldB
Reluctantly for she was breathing lowC
Her hand she slowly lifted from her lapD
And smiling sadly in the old sweet wayE
She pointed to the nail where hung my capD
Her eyes said I shall last another dayE
But scarcely had we reached the distant placeF
When o'er the hills we heard a faint bell ringingG
A boy came running up with frightened faceF
We knew the fatal news that he was bringingG
I heard him listlessly without a moanH
Although the only one I loved was goneI

The dawn departs the morning is begunJ
The trades come whispering from off the seasK
The fields of corn are golden in the sunJ
The dark brown tassels fluttering in the breezeK
The bell is sounding and the children passL
Frog leaping skipping shouting laughing shrillM
Down the red road over the pasture grassL
Up to the school house crumbling on the hillM
The older folk are at their peaceful toilN
Some pulling up the weeds some plucking cornO
And others breaking up the sun baked soilN
Float faintly scented breeze at early mornO
Over the earth where mortals sow and reapP
Beneath its breast my mother lies asleepP
