Scene A moonlit glade on a summer midnightA
-
THE POETB
-
How pale the sapphire of the central nightA
Wherein the stars turn grey The summer's greenC
Edg d and strong by day is dull and faintD
Beneath the moon's all monorating moodE
That in this absence of the impassioned sunF
Sways to a sleep of sound and calm of colorG
The live and vivid aspect of the worldH
Even thought itself is strangely overcomeI
And like the pale beginning of a dreamJ
Here were the theater of a miracleK
If such within a world long alienateL
From its first dreams and shut with skeptic yearsM
Might now befallN
-
THE PHILOSOPHERG
-
The Huntress rides no moreO
Across the upturned faces of the starsP
'Tis but the dead shell of a frozen worldH
Glttering with desolation Earth's old godsQ
The gods that haunt like dreams each planet's youthR
Are fled from years incredulous and tiredS
With penetrating of manifolded masksT
That give but emptiness they served to hideU
Remains not faith enough to bring them backV
Pan to his wood Diana to her moonW
And all the powers that once made populousX
A haggard world where Time grows weary nowY
Yet Youth that lives might for a little claimZ
That vanished pantheon on such a nightA
When under the lowering marvel of the moonW
The films of time wear perilously thinA2
And thought looks backward to the simpler yearsM
Till all the vision seems but just beyondB2
If one have faith it may be that he shallC2
Behold them once once only and no moreO
Because of Time's inhospitalityB2
For which they may not stayB2
-
THE POETB2
-
The quiet lightB2
Surges and fumes like to a spectral seaD2
Whereof relimning foundered shapes are bornE2
Is it a throng of luminous white cloudsF2
Phantoms of some old storm's death driven TitansG2
That float beneath the moon and speak with voicesH2
Like the last echoes of a thunder spentB2
'Tis the forsaken gods that win a footholdB2
About the magic circle which the moonW
Draws like some old enchantress round the gladeB2
-
THE PHILOSOPHERG
-
I see them not the vision is addressedB2
Only to thine acute and eager youthR
-
JOVEI2
-
All heaven and earth were once my throneJ2
Now I have but the wind aloneJ2
For shifting judgment seatB2
The pillared world supported meD2
Yet man's old incredulityD2
Left nothing for my feetB2
-
PANK2
-
Man hath forgotten meD2
Yet seems it that my memoryD2
Saddens the wistful voices of the woodB2
Within each erst frequented spotB2
Echo forgets my music notB2
Nor Earth my tread where trampling years have stoodB2
-
ARTEMISH2
-
Time hath grown coldB2
Toward beauty loved of oldB2
The gods must quakeL2
When dreams and hopes forsakeL2
The heart of manK2
And disillusion's banK2
More chill than stoneJ2
Rears till the former throneJ2
Of lovelinessH2
Is dark and tenantlessH2
Now must I weepM2
Homeless within the deepM2
Where once of oldB2
Mine orb d chariot rolledB2
And mourn in vainN2
Man's immemorial painN2
UncomfortedB2
Of light and beauty fledB2
-
APOLLOO2
-
Time wearied of my songP2
A satiate and capricious kingQ2
Who for his pleasure bade me singQ2
First of his minstrel throngP2
Till cloyed with melodyB2
His ear grew faint to voice and lyreR2
Forgotten then of Time's desireG
His thought was void of meB2
-
APHRODITEB2
-
I born of sound and foamS2
Child of the sea and windB2
Was fire upon mankindB2
Fuelled with Syria and with Greece and RomeS2
Time fanned me with his breathT2
Love found new warmth in meB2
And Life its ecstasyB2
Till I grew deadly with the wind of deathT2
-
A NYMPHI2
-
How can the world be still so beautifulK
When beauty's self is fled 'Tis like the muteB2
And marble loveliness of some dead girlU2
And we that hover here are as the spiritB2
Of former voice and motion and live colorG
In that which shall not stir nor speak againV2
-
ANOTHER NYMPHI2
-
Nay rather say this lovely lifeless worldB2
Is but a rigid semblance counterfeitingQ2
The world which was nor have the gods retainedB2
Such power as once informed and rendered vitalK
The cryptic irresponsiveness of stoneJ2
That statue which Pygmalion made and lovedB2
-
ATB2
-
I who was discord among menV2
Alone of all Time's hierarchyB2
Find that Time hath no need of meB2
No lack that I might fill againV2
-
THE POETB2
-
Tell me O gods are ye forever doomedB2
To fall and flutter among spatial windsH2
Finding release nor foothold anywhereW2
Debarred from doors of all the suns like spiritsH2
Whose names are blotted from the lists of timeX2
Though they themselves yet wander undestroyedB2
-
THE GODS TOGETHERG
-
Throneless discrowned and impotentB2
In man's sad disillusionmentB2
We passed with Earth's returnless youthR
Who were the semblances of truthR
The veils that hid the vacantnessH2
Infinite naked meaninglessH2
The blank and universal SphinxH2
Each world confronts at last and sinksH2
New gods forefend awhile the gazeH2
Of man each one a veil that staysH2
Till the new gods discreditedB2
Like mist that melts with noon are fledB2
That power oppressive limitlessH2
The tyranny of nothingnessH2
Our power is dead upon the earthY2
With the first dews and dawns of timeX2
But in the far and younger climeX2
Of other worlds it hath rebirthY2
Yea though we find not entrance hereZ2
Astray like feathers on the windB2
To neither earth nor heaven consignedB2
Fresh altars in a distant sphereA3
Are keen with fragrance bright with fireG
New hearths to warm us from the nightB2
Till banished thence we pass in flightB2
While all the flames of dream expireR2
