A Dream Of The Abyss Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDBACEDEFFGGH HIJKKLLMNJMKKNNOOPII P| I seemed at the sheer end | A |
| Albeit mine eyes in mystery and night | B |
| Shrouded as with the close deep caul of death | C |
| Or as if underneath Lethean lentors drowned | D |
| Saw never lamp nor star nor dead star's wraith of light | B |
| Yet seemed I at the world's sheer end | A |
| And fearfully and slowly I drew breath | C |
| From silent gulfs of all uncertainty and dread | E |
| Precipitate to nadir from around | D |
| Nor trusted I on any side to tread | E |
| One pace lest I should overstep the brink | F |
| And infinitely and forever sink | F |
| Past eye shot of the Cyclopean sun | G |
| When from the bulwark of the world adown oblivion | G |
| He on the morrow should stare after me | H |
| - | |
| Swift from infinity | H |
| The enormous Fear that lives between the stars | I |
| Clutched with the cold great darkness at my heart | J |
| Then from the gulf arose a whispering | K |
| And rustle as of silence on the wing | K |
| To stay and stand | L |
| Anear at my right hand | L |
| What powers abysmal born of the blind air | M |
| What nameless demons of the nether deep | N |
| That 'scape the sun and from the moonlight live apart | J |
| Came and conspired against me there | M |
| I heard not ere the whispering | K |
| Ceased and a heavier darkness seemed to spring | K |
| Upon me and I felt the silence leap | N |
| And clasp me closer and the sweep | N |
| Of ah the abyss reach up and drag | O |
| Body and feet from the crumbling uttermost crag | O |
| To the emptiness unknown | P |
| Nor knew I plunging through those nadir firmaments | I |
| If Azrael or Abbadon bore me thence | I |
| Or if I fell alone | P |
